Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware with Stenciled Brown-Slip Floral Motif, attributed to the Whelchel Pottery, Gaffney, SC area, late 19th century, ovoid jar with rounded shoulder, tall collar, and pronounced, flattened rim with vertical flange, stencil-decorated on the front with a brown-slip daisy plant beside a freehand brown-slip "2," all against an olive, cream-green, and brown alkaline-glazed ground. Provenance: From a fifty-year SC collection. Several small to large rim chips. A long horizontal surface line at base with some short vertical lines extending off from it, not visible on interior. A few minor base nicks. A 7/8" in-the-firing contact mark to reverse. Areas of in-the-firing bubbling to glaze. H 12 1/2".
