Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Two-Color Slip Decoration, attributed to Thomas Chandler, Phoenix Factory, Shaw's Creek, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and flattened tab handles, decorated with a drape design composed of brushed iron and slip-trailed kaolin slip against a mottled olive alkaline-glazed ground. Unusual traces of rutile throughout. Provenance: From a fifty-year SC collection. Significant network of cracks to one side including a small hole along central crack. Rim secured with an old wire. H 11 1/4".
