Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Incised Markings, attributed to Pottersville Pottery, Edgefield District, SC, possibly David Drake, circa 1825-1840, ovoid jar with arched lug handles, cylindrical collar, and semi-rounded rim, the surface covered in a mottled olive alkaline glaze. Shoulder incised with a small C followed by five small slash marks. Closely related in form to David Drake's work and possibly by his hand. Provenance: From a fifty-year SC collection. A 7 3/4" inverted Y-shaped crack from rim. Reverse with a 6" hairline from rim and a 5 3/4" diagonal hairline from rim. A small in-the-firing ping to shoulder on reverse. Some minor surface wear. H 15 1/4".
