Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON . / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1855, ovoid jug with tapered spout molding, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flowering plant with spotted blossom and smaller bud. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Possibly decorated by itinerant potter, James Reilly, from New York State. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. Two adjacent reglued sections at base, measuring a total of 6 1/2" x 1 3/4". Two short hairlines extend off from this damage. Damage includes a small flake to underside. Two in-the-firing pings to one side. Some light staining. An in-the-firing unglazed area to center of decoration. H 14".
