Extremely Rare Albany-Slip-Glazed Stoneware Mouse Toy, Incised "W Pfeifer / Nov 2 1891 / Give," attributed to the Central New York Pottery, Utica, NY, 1891, hand-modeled figure of a mouse with applied round eyes and incised muzzle, the surface covered in a chocolate-brown Albany slip glaze. Underside incised with an inscription for William Pfeifer, the infant son of Central New York Pottery potter, Henry Pfeifer. The incised word, "Give," on the underside may be an immigrant potter's attempt at writing, "Gift." This figure evidently saw a lot of use from William Pfeifer as a child as it is missing its tail and lost both ears at some point. Literature: A match safe with applied lamb, also made for William Pfeifer and impressed "WM. PFEIFER," is illustrated in Scherer, Art for the People: Decorated Stoneware from the Weitsman Collection, p. 140. Missing tail. Both ears restored. L 2 3/4".
