Unusual Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Mug, attributed to the Pfaltzgraff Pottery, York, PA, early 20th century, cylindrical mug with Bristol-slip-glazed surface, inscribed "R.S.," in cobalt between two cobalt bands. Cobalt stripe to handle. Pencil inscription "R S" on underside. According to family history, this mug was made by potter, Roy Samuel Dennis, for his own personal use at the Pfaltzgraff Pottery. He was reportedly one of a number of Dennis family members working at the pottery, accounting for the lack of a third letter, "D," in the inscription. Provenance: Descended in the Dennis family to its current owner. A thin 3" line from rim. A 7/16" in-the-firing ping to shoulder. A tiny rim nick. Two minor in-the-firing surface flaws. H 3 7/16".
