Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to William Linton, Baltimore, MD, circa 1860, cylindrical cooler with tapered shoulder, squared rim, dense lug handles, and circular bunghole, boldly-decorated on the front and reverse with a hanging stem bearing graduated leaves and three large, fan-shaped blossoms. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and bunghole. Significantly rarer than similarly-decorated pieces made in West Baltimore during the same time period by the Perine family, this cooler ranks among the finest examples of Linton's work that we have offered. Shallow rim chips, some of which occurred in the firing. Small in-the-firing flaws to surface. An approximately 4 1/4" vertical line on front. Shallow chipping/wear to interior edge of bunghole. Two small, shallow in-the-firing chips and some minor post-firing chipping to bottom edge of cooler. H 15 1/2".
