Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'," PA origin, circa 1850-1880, cylindrical jar with extruded lug handles and flared collar, decorated on the front and reverse with three horizontal tulips in Bell's distinctive style and completely around the collar with a series of swags. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent decoration and color. A 9" crack from rim on reverse. Some faint stained spider lines near base on reverse connecting to a vertical line extending to shoulder on reverse. A 4 3/4" hairline from rim on proper right side of jar's front. A small worn spot to shoulder on front. Small rim chips. Spots of staining to surface. Some faint lines on underside. H 14 1/8".
