Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Vertically-Stenciled "WILKINSON & FLEMING / SHINNSTON. W.VA," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, featuring rarely-seen, vertically-applied Wilkinson & Fleming maker's stenciling accented with stenciled roses, flourishes, and geometric motifs. Freehand stripe below rim. Base with bold-faced stenciled "3" flanked by stenciled leaf motifs. An additional stenciled "3" flanks the maker's stenciling on the left and right sides of the jar's front. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse with a spider crack descending from shoulder area to area near base. Part of this spider crack continues as a thin line partway onto jar's front. A small in-the-firing ping to rim. Wear to handle terminals. Some surface-level crazing to base area, not visible on interior. Areas of light wear and some staining to surface. H 13 3/8".
