Extremely Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning with Reverse Stencil, Stenciled "BOYERS / & / HARDEN / PALATINE / W VA," circa 1875, tapering jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded "wax sealer" rim, featuring reversed Boyers & Harden maker's stenciling within a wreath. Stenciled "1" below, although jar is smaller than one gallon. Few examples of stoneware from the entire Western Pennsylvania / West Virginia potting tradition are known with reversed stenciling to the maker's mark. Some small shallow chips to interior of rim, some of which occurred in the firing. A minor worn spot to inner wax sealer rim. Minor residue to reverse. H 9 3/4".
