Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, Stenciled "G.W. JOHNSTON. / CLARKSBURGH. / W. VA," circa 1880, ovoid jug with tooled spout, featuring G.W. Johnston maker's stenciling surrounded by stenciled flourishes. Wavy freehand stripe above. Base with freehand "3" underscored by a stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The finest example of George Johnston's work that we have offered, this jug appears to be slightly earlier than most pieces known. A faint horizontal line to handle. Some crazing to surface. Two in-the-firing contact marks to reverse. A 5/8" glazed-over ping on far right side of jug's front. Some staining to surface. H 17".
