Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "WEST TROY, / N.Y. / POTTERY," circa 1875, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of two crested, ring-necked birds perched on a plant. One bird assumes a seated position while the other is depicted with an open beak, feeding on berries. Prior to firing, the decorator carved out two small divots in the clay to form the eye of each bird. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. Strong figural decoration featuring vivid color. Very nice condition with only minor flaws: a small flake to front; minor wear to cobalt; a small chip and minor nick to side of handle; and light staining. H 14 1/2".
