Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "W.H. FARRAR & Co. / GEDDES, N.Y.," circa 1850, cylindrical jug decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a bird with striped and spotted body and solid-cobalt wing, standing atop a stylized mound with vine-like pattern within, beside a fan-shaped plant. Slip-trailed "1" or flourish above plant. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Strong decoration and excellent color, potted in a desirable small size. Provenance: Waasdorp American Pottery Auction, Clarence, NY. An approximately 5" x 2" curved area of restoration to surface of underside, extending approximately 1/2" up base and 2" horizontally on base, not affecting decoration. This restoration does not extend through to the interior. An approximately 3/4" x 1/2" restored spot below bird, barely touching bird's belly as well as including touch-up to a small curved part of the plant below bird. Some in-the-firing missing spots to decoration. A minor in-the-firing contact mark to front and side of jug. A minor spout chip. H 12".
