Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird and Floral Decoration, Stamped "W.H. FARRAR & CO. / GEDDES. N.Y.," circa 1850, semi-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a bird with turned head, solid-cobalt wing, and dashed body, perched on a dramatic looping flourish embellished with curved strokes within and below. An elaborate brushed and slip-trailed flower emanating from the flourish appears beside the bird. Slip-trailed "3" to shoulder. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A wonderful example of a prized Farrar motif, this jug's design is the first of its type that we have offered depicting the bird with a turned-head stance. Provenance: Recently discovered in California. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some light bubbling to cobalt. H 16 1/2".
