Extremely Rare Molded Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher, Inscribed "Blue Silt," Stamped "S. RISLEY / NORWICH / 3," CT origin, circa 1850-1875, molded with a relief arch-and-column motif around the body, upswept spout, and spurred handle, the surface covered in a whitish Bristol-type glaze and decorated with cobalt highlights. Underside impressed with Sidney Risley maker's mark followed by the number, "3." Underside additionally incised "Blue Silt(?)," likely referring to the glaze. Underside additionally inscribed with the notation in brownish slip, "1 % / 1742." The first Risley pitcher in this form and glaze that we have offered. A horizontal crack around base with a short line extending vertically from it below handle and a short line descending from it onto underside; base does not appear to be broken out and reglued. Some bubbling to glaze. H 7 3/8".
