Scarce Stoneware Water Cooler with Incised Bird Decoration, New York State origin, probably Albany, circa 1820, ovoid, jug-form cooler with circular bunghole and two applied handles emanating from a semi-squared spout, decorated on the front with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a crested bird with ringed neck and rigorous incising to its body, perched on a stylized leaf. Cobalt highlights to lower handle terminals. Desirable form and decoration. In-the-firing flakes to spout. A small chip to bunghole. Some wear to inner edge of bunghole. A 3" hairline to shoulder. Two hairlines to proper left handle. No parts of this handle, however, are reglued. A 3" diagonal line at base on front extending from a small base chip. Underside with a minor 2" Y-shaped line and minor 1 1/8" in-the-firing surface fissure. H 17 1/2".
