Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Double Pheasant Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with an artistically-rendered, slip-trailed design of two crossed pheasants with turned heads, perched on a forked stump with stylized ground and shrubs at base. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. One of the Nortons' most prized avian designs. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example from a forty-year private collection. A shallow 1 1/8" base flake on proper right side of jug. A 7/8" glazed-over in-the-firing iron ping on side on proper right side of jug. A 1/8" hole in reverse near base of handle. Some short, minor glazed-over lines at base. A tiny spout chip, very minor U-shaped surface line in spout, and minor spout wear. H 16 1/4".
