Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Shinnston, WV origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with a two vertical vine motifs flanking a cobalt-script "2" with graduated dashes above and below. Two freehand stripes below rim. Areas of restoration to body of jar, including a restored inverted Y-shaped crack to front, descending from shoulder a short distance onto underside, including touch-up to cobalt. Two small rim chips, one of which is glazed over. Large, deep flakes to interior base. H 11 3/4".
