Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Syrup Jug with Elaborate Bird Decoration, Stamped "NEW YORK / STONEWARE CO, / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jug with flaring and pinched spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with unusual turned-head stance, perched on a large, detailed vine. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. Spider crack in underside, extending up proper left side of jug. Some fry to decoration. Spout with a few chips and wear. Overfired spot at base of jug. Areas of staining. H 14 1/4".
