Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON VT:," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a leaf accented with spots. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: From a fifty-year VA collection. A 9 1/2" diagonal line to right of bird on front. A 7 1/2" diagonal line to reverse. A few minor rim chips. A 5 3/4" surface line to underside, not visible on interior. Minor traces of old gray paint residue to proper left side of crock. H 12 1/4".
