Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Bird-in-Wreath Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BEENINGTON VT," circa 1860, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch within a large wreath accented with numerous spots. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: A recently-surfaced examples from a forty-year private collection. A long curving crack from rim on front. A small chip to proper right handle. A 5/8" rim chip. Minor to small chips to inner rim for lid. A minor in-the-firing lime ping to proper right side of churn. Some minor staining and minor flecks of paint to surface. H 17".
