Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "BOUGHNER / GREENSBORO / PA," circa 1860, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated across the shoulder with an undulating vine bearing Germanic tulips between two freehand stripes. Further decorated below with a cobalt-script "5" flanked and underscored by graduated dashes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse impressed with Boughner maker's mark. A tight 8" Y-shaped crack to underside, part of which continues 1 1/4" up front and part of which continues a few inches up reverse. A very faint, approximately 2" x 2" X-shaped surface line below proper left handle, not visible on interior. Some light staining. H 15".
