Alkaline-Glazed Double Face Jug with Rock Teeth, Signed "Lanier Meaders," Cleveland, GA, circa 1975, ovoid jug with two applied handles, decorated on each side with a hand-modeled face featuring crooked eyes, nose, and mouth featuring quartz teeth, kaolin eyes, and black-glazed pupils. Surface covered in a mottled olive-green alkaline glaze with appealing runs. Incised "Lanier Meaders" on underside. Lot includes a 1983 National Heritage Fellowships booklet from the Smithsonian Institution featuring Lanier Meaders's awarding of the fellowship. Provenance: From a fifty-year VA collection; Acquired by the consignor at Laws Auction, Manassas, VA, in 1977. Losses to two teeth on one face. Opposing side with loss to one tooth and an in-the-making glaze flake to upper lip. H 10 1/2".
