Very Rare Cold-Painted Redware Figure of a Spaniel, Stamped "JOHN BELL", Waynesboro, PA origin, circa 1840-1880, molded figure of a Cavalier King Charles spaniel on slab base, the surface with original black-and-white paint, including sponged details throughout and finely-brushed facial features, collar, locket, and chain. Original red paint to mouth. Old lacquer to surface. Impressed on underside with John Bell maker's mark. Among the most coveted forms by this renowned Shenandoah Valley regional potter, featuring a desirable painted surface. A 5 7/8" reglued section to base on reverse. A few shallow chips along underside at edge. Painted surface survives in excellent condition with very minor wear. H 9 3/8".
