Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Dated 1853, Beaver, PA origin, 1853, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a diagonal flower flanked by two leaves, above the vertically-inscribed date, "1853," all applied over a slip-coated surface. Large cobalt highlights to handle terminals and impressed two-gallon capacity mark flanked by two asterisks. Excellent brushwork and strong color. Very nice condition with a faint 3 1/4" Y-shaped line below proper right handle and a shallow 1/2" chip to same handle. H 11".
