Glazed Redware Jar, attributed to Emanuel Suter, New Erection Pottery, near Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, VA, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tapered shoulder and short, vertical rim with inner flange design to hold a lid; surface coated in a heavy lead-and-manganese-glaze featuring dramatic splashes of orange against a heavily-speckled, reddish-brown ground. Literature: For related pieces, see Evans and Suter, A Great Deal of Stone and Earthen Ware, p. 87. Provenance: From a fifty-year New England collection. A few deep flakes to body, painted brown. A few base chips with traces of brown paint. A minor chip to interior of rim. Wear to inner rim for lid. H 10".
