Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Incised Floral Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK, JR.," Athens, NY, circa 1845, ovoid, bowl-like jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with an extravagant, incised and cobalt-highlighted flowering plant composed of deeply-carved strokes. Center of blossom decorated with impressed circular cross motif. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with "N. CLARK, JR." maker's mark on reverse. Provenance: Ex-Warren Hartmann Collection; William Bouck Collection. A top-to-bottom Y-shaped crack from rim on front, forming a reglued 11 1/2" x 6 1/2" section of jar that extends below proper left handle and onto reverse. This damage includes chips to interior along the break. An additional thin 3" in-the-firing crack from rim on front, visible as a wider crack on interior. Rim chips.
