Exceptional Ten-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "BOUGHNER / GREENSBORO / PA," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with incised banding to body, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, lavishly-decorated with two undulating vines bearing Germanic tulips between freehand stripes. Further decorated below with a freehand "10" flanked and underscored by a series of wavy stripes. Impressed at shoulder with the maker's mark, "BOUGHER / GREENSBORO / PA," in which the initials "A & W" have been removed, likely employed shortly after Alexander Vance Boughner took sole ownership of the pottery. The shoulder is stamped with three ten-gallon capacity marks, two of which are impressed over twelve-gallon marks, which were stamped into the jar in error. The reverse is impressed again with a Boughner maker's mark along with two ten-gallon capacity marks. The finest jar that we have ever offered bearing a stamped Boughner mark, this work is elevated by its fine decoration, large size, and outstanding color. Of particular note is the color of both the clay and cobalt on this jar, ranking among the best that we have seen on a piece of Western Pennsylvania stoneware. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 19 1/2".
