Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Presentation Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Inscribed "B. Northrop / Deerfield.," Stamped "J. CAMPBELL / UTICA," NY State origin, circa 1825, highly-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a curving floral motif at the shoulder on the front, the reverse incised with the large script inscription, "B. Northrop. / Deerfield." highlighted in cobalt slip. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. This stately jar combines the rare maker's mark of Utica's earliest stoneware potter, Justin Campbell, with a desirable inscription dedicating it to its owner, farmer Benjamin Northrop of Deerfield, NY. Only the second signed Campbell piece that we have ever offered and possibly one of his finest works known. An old rim chip to front with traces of old paint. Various in-the-firing flaws, including a 1 3/4" glazed-over chip to proper right handle, small pings and contact marks, and some fry to cobalt. What appear to be tight cracks in the front are actually pre-firing scratches, possibly made accidentally with a potter's tool. Two hairlines from rim, measuring 1 3/8" and 1 3/4". A 1 3/8" flake to underside along bottom edge. H 13 1/2".
