Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SMITH & BRICKNER / 22I. WASHINGTON .ST. / ALBANY NY," circa 1845, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with curved-stem floral motif below the rarely-found circular maker's mark of Smith & Brickner, highlighted in cobalt. The potter depressed the interior wall of the vessel when applying this stamp, producing a clear impression and slightly raised circle on the stamp's interior. The only example bearing this specific stamp that we have ever offered. Literature: Illustrated in Broderick and Bouck, Pottery Works: Potteries of New York State's Capital District, p. 52. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. A sealed 7" crack from on front. Two small flakes to shoulder on reverse, Rim with a 5/8" flake, a minor cihp, and a minor glazed-over chip. A minor chip to interior of rim. A few minor chips to proper right handle. H 10 5/8".
