Scarce and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "POTTERY WORKS / LITTLE W 12ST ST N.Y.," William Macquoid Pottery, Manhattan, NY, circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a walking stag with extravagant antlers, depicted in a feeding stance above a cluster of flowers with tree at its rear and stylized bushes and ground cover below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Featuring stronger cobalt than is typically seen on Macquoid's work, this crock is likely an earlier work from this pottery. Provenance: James Chebalo Collection. A 4" vertical surface line beside decoration on front, not visible on interior. Two inverted T-shaped cracks from rim on reverse, measuring 5 7/8" and 4". A thin 4" crack on underside, extending 2 3/4" up base on reverse. Additional surface-level spider lines to underside, not visible on interior. An in-the-firing separation to interior base and an in-the-firing chip to interior base. Some light staining and minor surface wear. H 9 7/8".
