Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watch Spring and Star Motifs, attributed to Abraham Mead, Greenwich, CT, circa 1790, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, flaring, squared rim, and open loop handles, decorated with slip-trailed "watch spring" motifs on the front and reverse, with each spiral culminating in a star. Additional watch springs descend from the terminal of each handle, flanking a number "2" below each handle. The first example of Mead's work that we have seen incorporating stars into his classic watch spring design. Provenance: Recently discovered in New England. Tight cracks to underside, extending onto body of jar where they form multiple small to large Y's. A few small base chips. A few typical in-the-firing contact marks (surface chips). H 13 1/4".
