Exceptional Copper-Decorated Redware Jar, Bristol County, MA origin, late 18th or early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and narrow opening with inner rim designed to hold a lid, the surface decorated with dramatic runs of copper over a yellowish-orange ground and covered in a heavy lead glaze. The copper application apparently included a significant amount of lead and may have been applied after the initial lead glaze to the body of jar, resulting in a raised, goldish-hued concentration of glaze to the upper body, following the path of the copper's flow. A beautifully-colored example of early New England redware, this jar features a glaze treatment that is significantly rarer than the iconic solid-copper jars from this region. A large area of glaze loss to one side. A few other flakes of glaze loss to body. Wear to rim and inner rim for lid. H 8 1/2".
