Rare and Fine Slip-Decorated Redware Spaniel, PA origin, circa 1840-1880, slip-cast figure of a seated spaniel with incised details to face, the surface decorated with heavy spots and highlights in cream-colored and manganese slip, applied under a clear lead glaze. Bold decoration with appealing sideways glance to dog's face. This exact spaniel is pictured in the well-known 1993 Richard Flanders Smith poster entitled, "Birds & Beasts", which depicts Pennsylvania redware animal figures. Very nice condition with a 3/4" in-the-firing lime ping to dog's back, which has been partially covered with old glue or varnish. A second, small area of surface wear, possibly in the firing, is also covered with the same glue or varnish on the reverse side of the dog. H 7".
