Rare and Fine Open-Handled Redware Jar with Three-Color Slip Decoration, Southeastern PA origin, late 18th or early 19th century, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with footed base, flaring rim with vertically-flanged interior, and vertical open-strap handles, elaborately-decorated on the front and reverse with alternating trails of copper and yellow slip interspersed with blackish manganese spots, all above a wavy yellow and copper slip stripe between straight yellow slip stripes. Additional yellow slip stripe decoration to handles. A finely potted and decorated example characteristic of early Pennsylvania redware. Provenance: Pook and Pook, Inc., The Collection of Lester and Barbara Breininger, Nov. 11, 2011, lot 385. Wear and losses to slip, primarily to line decoration at base. Chips and wear to rim and base, including a 1 1/4" flake to rim. Wear to handles. A thin crack to one handle. H 5 1/8" ; Diam. 7 1/4".
