Outstanding Open-Handled Redware Jar with Profuse Sgraffito Floral and Heart Motifs, Southeastern PA origin, late 18th or early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled banding to body, and vertically-flanged rim fitted with two open ribbed handles; the jar's slip-coated surface features extravagant sgraffito decoration in the form of a flowering plant bearing tulip and star-shaped blossoms emanating from a heart. Inverted V-shaped sgraffito fills negative space at the base, interspersed with stalk-like foliate motifs. Jar is further decorated on each side with cyma curves below numerous vertically-carved slashes. Surface further decorated with splashes of copper and covered in a clear lead glaze. Featuring lavish sgraffito treatment on the front, reverse, and even the sides, this work is among the most extravagantly-decorated Pennsylvania redware jars known. Adding to its scarcity is its jar form, significantly rarer than the dishes for which sgraffito ware is most well known. Provenance: A recently-surfaced work, acquired by the consignor from a New Jersey antiques dealer/collector several decades ago. Significant glaze loss throughout. Two base chips and a minor base nick. H 7".
