Extremely Rare Small-Sized Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Impressed Eagle Maker's Mark, Stamped "A.H. EGOLF", Abraham H. Egolf, Bedford County, PA origin, third quarter 19th century, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, decorated on the front and reverse with a curving stroke of matte cobalt slip. Light salt glaze to surface. Shoulder impressed with the ornate maker's mark, "A. EGOLF," surrounded by vines, underscored by crossed arrows with star, and surmounted by a spread-winged Federal eagle. Scant references in the historical record bear out that Abraham H. Egolf operated a stoneware manufactory circa 1876 near Bedford, Pennsylvania--apparently just west of Schellsburg, specifically. One of only two examples of Egolf's work that we have ever offered. Long line to exterior and interior, including a hairline across underside, continuing partway up body of jar in two places. Two minor rim nicks. An in-the-firing ping near midsection on reverse. H 5".
