Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Federal Eagle Motif, Stamped "WM E WARNER, / WEST TROY," NY State origin, mid 19th century, cylindrical jug with tooled shoulder and semi-squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a spread-winged eagle with shield across its chest, clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Further decorated below with American flag banners flanking a star. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. While Warner produced pieces with flying eagle motifs as one of his signature designs, this jug is the first example that we have offered depicting an eagle in classic Federal style with shield, olive branch, and arrows. A large spout chip and two small spout chips. In-the-firing residue to proper left side of jug. Minor surface wear. H 13".
