Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Eagle and Rose Motifs, Stenciled "Star Pottery.", Greensboro, PA, circa 1875, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and spout, decorated with a large stenciled design of an undulating vine bearing rose blossoms, above a spread-winged Federal eagle with banner, inscribed "Star Pottery." Base with freehand cobalt "3", flanked by dashes, underscored by a freehand stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A striking example of Western PA stenciling. Chipping to base of spout molding and a small in-the-firing chip to side of spout. A small bloated spot at base. Minor surface wear.
