Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "F.T. WRIGHT & SON / TAUNTON, MASS," circa 1870, semi-ovoid jug with tapering spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crossed, crested birds perched on a foliate spray. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Among the finest examples of Wright stoneware that we have offered, the first depicting a double bird motif. Provenance: James Chebalo Collection. Some shallow in-the-firing chipping/residue to spout. Some light surface wear. Glazed-over, in-the-making scratches to surface (not cracks). Two in-the-firing iron pings to proper left side of jug. H 17".
