Exceptional Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Parrot Decoration, Impressed "F.B. NORTON & CO. / WORCESTER, MASS.," Inscribed "Andrew Person / Worcester / Mass," circa 1870's, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a large design of a crested parrot perched in the crook of two leaves accented with spots and swags. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. Underside hand-incised in large script with the name of the potter, "Andrew Person / Worcester / Mass." Person must be the same Andrew "Parsson" who appears in an 1876 Augusta, Maine, city directory as a pottery worker, as well as the Andrew "Persson" who is listed in the 1900 federal census as a potter in Bangor, Maine. Born in Sweden circa 1841, he immigrated to America in 1869 and appears to have been an important part of the Norton family's Worcester operation; as such, he deserves to be researched and studied further as perhaps the originator of one of the most iconic designs in American stoneware, the Norton parrot. Among the finest F.B. Norton pieces with single parrot decoration that we have offered, combining prodigious size with rare maker's signature. Excellent condition with a chip to interior of rim, an in-the-firing ping to underside, and very minor staining. H 13 1/4".
