Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON. / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird with unusual comb and long tail, perched on a tree stump with stylized shrubs at base. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Desirable size and lesser-seen style of bird motif. Excellent condition with several minor flaws. Bottom edge with a minor chip and nick. A minor chip to exterior of rim. A minor in-the-firing iron ping to interior of rim. A minor nick and in-the-firing fissure to proper right handle. A minor chip to proper left handle. A very minor surface flake to front. Water glass staining to interior. H 7 3/4".
