Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT:," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a leaf, accented with a dotted trail. Slip-trailed "5" above. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A glazed-over chip to proper right handle. Rim chips. A small in-the-firing ping below bird. A 7" faint vertical surface line to reverse. Later inscription to underside written in faint blue. Some flecks of in-the-firing residue to rim. Minor staining to base area. H 12 3/4".
