Fine One-Gallon Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jug with Bold Iron Decoration, Stamped "BOSTON," Frederick Carpenter, Charlestown, MA, early 19th century, highly-ovoid jug with heavily-tooled shoulder and raised molding to spout, decorated with dipped reddish-brown iron-oxide decoration to the upper and lower body. This example is perhaps the best representation of Carpenter's dipped decoration that we have ever offered, featuring unusually vivid application of the iron solution. Very nice condition with only minor flaws. Underside with a 3/4" shallow chip along bottom edge including a 3/4" line extending from it on underside. A small base chip. A small spout chip. A few typical, minor in-the-firing surface flaws. Two voids in the iron decoration near the base appear to be finger smears created when the jug was dipped. H 12 1/2".
