Extremely Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher, Northeastern U.S. origin, possibly Manhattan, NY, 18th century, ovoid pitcher with footed base and tall, narrow collar with heavily-combed incising, decorated with a brushed cobalt band around the base of the collar and heavy highlights to the handle terminals. Among the earliest surviving salt-glazed stoneware pitchers produced in America. Very few examples of this form from the 18th century remain intact and above ground. Tight lines to underside, continuing onto base area, partially visible on interior. Small base chips, one of which is glazed over. An in-the-firing surface line to lower handle terminal. A minor spout nick. Some in-the-firing salt residue to surface. H 8 3/4".
