Very Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Plaque with Relief Classical Lion Tamer Motif, New York State origin, possibly Lyons, circa 1860, featuring a molded relief design of a man wearing a tunic, standing atop a lion and opening the animal's jaws with his hands. Background with relief palm tree designs. Cobalt highlights throughout. Reverse with faint cobalt initials, "T.C" or "T.H." along with an incised "T". The use of a molded lion with slip-trailed palm tree motif, found on a signed Thompson Harrington, Lyons, NY crock in the Weitsman Collection, offers the possibility that this plaque was made by Harrington and that the initials on the reverse are an obscured "T.H." for "Thompson Harrington". Provenance: Property of a New York State collector. Restored edge chips and a restored chip to lion's mane, measuring approximately 5/8" x 5/8" chip. A few other, unrestored edge chips on reverse. H 4" ; L 5 1/8".
