Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to J.D. Heatwole, Rockingham County, VA, circa 1855, ovoid jar with semi-squared rim and ribbed lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a sweeping stem bearing pairs of three-petaled flowers. Unusual addition of a single flower below each handle. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Areas of restoration to body. A crack across underside. A crack extending from base to midsection. Two rim chips. H 17 1/2".
