Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Pitcher, Stamped "JD.CRAVEN," Randolph or Moore County, NC, mid 19th century, finely-potted, thin-walled pitcher of ovoid form with heavily-tooled midsection, flared collar with tooled rim, and ribbed strap handle. Impressed with earlier Jacob Dorris Craven maker's mark on reverse. Few signed pitchers by this potter are known. Literature: Illustrated and discussed in Scarborough, The Craven Family of Southern Folk Potters, pg. 39, fig. 26. A 1" rim chip beside a 1 1/2" diagonal crack from rim. Minor wear to bottom edge of pitcher. H 9 1/2".
