Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt "Goony Bird" Decoration, Stamped "CORTLAND," Madison Woodruff, possibly with Romanzo Smith, NY State origin, circa 1867-1869, cylindrical jug with tooled shoulder and semi-squared spout, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a long-necked, crested bird with striped and spotted body, standing on a scrolled flourish. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. An iconic New York State motif featuring excellent color and a desirable size to the jug. A glazed-over 1 1/2" x 1 1/8" flake to base on front, which was smoothed over prior to firing. A small chip and minor nick to handle. Wear to lower handle terminal. Three minuscule nicks to spout. H 11 1/2".
