Two Pieces of Molded Stoneware with Pewter Lids, attributed to the White's Pottery, Utica, NY, late 19th century, a pitcher with mask spout, sea serpent handle, and basket-weave pattern, featuring a relief design of a classical figure's head on one side and a German slogan on the reverse, decorated throughout with cobalt slip as well as copper and Albany slip highlights to the figure's head and an Albany slip highlight to the serpent's mouth at lower handle terminal; paired with a mug with sea serpent handle, relief tavern scene on one side, and a relief strawberry pattern on reverse, the tavern scene highlighted in cobalt, copper, and two shades of brown slip, the strawberry motif highlighted in copper slip with traces of original red paint to berries, the remainder of the mug with cobalt highlights throughout. Salt-glazed surfaces. Pitcher with a 2" in-the-firing surface fissure to base and a 5/8" in-the-firing surface fissure, both along seam of mold, not visible on interior. Mug with thin horizontal crack to base of handle and some staining to base, in otherwise excellent condition. H (of pitcher, including lid) 15 1/4".
